Tarmac install solvent-less asphalt analysers

Carbolite's solvent-free ABA analysers have been installed at the seven laboratories in Tarmac Ltd's western area to replace the traditional method of measuring asphalt binder content using methylene chloride.

The ABA analysers determine binder content using a loss-on-ignition procedure in an electric furnace instead of separating the binder from the aggregate with methylene chloride. Having weighed a sample, the operator places it in the furnace, inputs the weight into the control system and starts the programme. The sample is then continuously weighed by an internal balance as the binder is burnt off, and at the end of the test the amount of binder content is printed out.

Total test times range from 20min for 6mm samples to 45min for 40mm samples. An integral after burner consumes furnace emissions.

'The problems associated with methylene chloride are well known in theindustry, and the Carbolite ABA analyser is a reliable, cost-effective alternative,' said Tarmac's area technical supervisor, Andy Howdle. 'These seven plants are sometimes supplying 5,000 tonnes of material a day between them, and the quality of every batch has to be right, so any testing system must be completely reliable.'

'As well as greatly improving the safety of laboratory staff, the seven quarries no longer have to handle, store or dispose of the highly volatile solvent,' said Mr Howdle.
