Support builds for Minerals 2002

THE organizers of Minerals 2002 say support for the pan-European campaign is continuing to grow with the announcement that both Hanson Building Materials Europe and Castle Cement are to stage a number of open days for the public.

"Hanson are planning to hold 10 open days throughout the year, including one at their Needingworth site, near St Ives, Cambridgeshire, where over 700ha of sand and gravel quarry are being systematically restored to create Europe’s biggest wetland site. The project will take 30 years to complete and will provide a suitable habitat for a host of rare birds such as the bittern and marsh harrier."

An event to celebrate this joint Hanson and RSPB project is being held at Needingworth on 4 July and the site will be opened to the public that afternoon.

"Hanson’s David Weeks said: ‘We must make it clear to the public that not only are minerals essential to their everyday life, but the quarrying industry does a wonderful job of restoring the land when our work on site is complete.’"

"Castle Cement are also supporting the campaign, most notably with an open day at their Ribblesdale works in Lancashire over the weekend of 6–7 July. Visitors will be invited to tour the cement works and the nearby quarry, with a particular emphasis on providing interest for children."
