Successful open day for Hills Quarry Products

NEWLY opened Woodsford Quarry, near Dorchester, has met with a positive response from guests who attended a recent open day hosted by site operators Hills Quarry Products Ltd.

Visitors were given the opportunity to meet Hills’ staff and experience first hand the day-to-day activities of a modern sand and gravel quarry.

Guests included members of the site liaison committee, local residents, representatives of Dorset County Council, suppliers, environmental groups and customers.

As well as tours of the site to demonstrate the processes involved in extracting minerals and producing ready-mixed concrete, Thames Valley Archaeological Services displayed interesting finds from the quarry and were on hand to answer questions on the archaeology of the area.

Commenting on the event, Alan Mackenzie, group director for the company, said: ‘This type of event gives Hills the opportunity to meet with stakeholders and to work together, via future liaison meetings, to provide the minerals that society needs to build our schools and hospitals and improve the environment we live in.’

The total area of the new quarry is 163.6ha and current reserves of flint, sand and gravel amount to 4.2 million tonnes. The site will ultimately be restored to agricultural use.
