Solution to copper cable theft

IN recent months the theft of valuable copper cable has grown to epidemic proportions. The rise in the price of copper on the world commodities market is reported to be the underlying reason. As a result, the scrap value of copper is now so attractive that thieves are prepared to put themselves at considerable risk in order to make significant gains. There have even been reported incidents in which thieves have literally cut through a live high-voltage cable.

The problems caused by cable theft can be huge, and the owners of property and infrastructure affected by this crime may suffer losses that far exceed the value of the stolen cable. Not only must the cable be either repaired or replaced, but during the period while this is being organized the facility may have to be shut down. Among others quarries, railways and electricity substations have all reported an increase in this type of crime in recent months.

Hampshire-based Tag Guard Systems, specialists in wireless alarm and CCTV security systems, have responded to this concern by developing a new power loss detection system to raise an alarm if a cable is broken. The system, which can be deployed at very short notice on a wide variety of different cables and voltages, is said to offer a highly effective and economical solution.

Tag Guard Systems say they are currently working with a major UK quarrying company to help reduce their losses. In one particular case, a quarry was attacked and short lengths of several adjacent cables were removed. The resulting shutdown period and repair costs resulted in losses approaching £100,000 for this single incident.

For further information about the new power loss detection system or any of Tag Guard Systems’ other services, including plant and vehicle management and tracking systems and lone worker protection systems, contact the company on tel: (02392) 598218; fax: (02392) 598918.
