Small is beautiful

Reggiana Riduttori UK (RR UK) have specified and supplied one of their latest series-200 planetary gear units for a newly commissioned Powertech Industries primary crushing plant.

"The machine specified by Alfred McAlpine Plant for Blue Circle at their Northfleet works is a twin-roll crusher with 1,000mm centres which is processing chalk at an average rate of 800 tonnes/h. With a lead time from order to delivery of only 10 weeks, Powertech would have struggled to produce one of their own heavy-duty gearboxes, so were forced to look for an alternative supplier. The gear unit had to satisfy exacting performance and durability standards and so RR UK shipped a standard series-200 model from their parent plant in Italy."

"The model supplied was an RR8000 two-stage linear planetary gear unit with a nominal output torque rating of 85,000Nm, capable of transmitting an installed power of 200kW at 1,475 rev/min. The unit has a splined male output shaft for direct connection to the customer’s own final splitter box for driving the twin rolls. The input shaft is a male cylindrical type fitted with a fluid coupling also supplied by RR UK. One of Powertech’s performance features is full-load start-up to avoid manual digging and clean-outs. The fluid coupling provides a suitable soft start and provides further protec-tion in the event of a logjam."

"The compact dimensions of the series-200 gearbox meant that it was easy to install in place of the standard unit and did not add weight to the already heavy machine. The coaxial planetary configura-tion has also encouraged Powertech to consider separate drives for the twin shafts and eliminate the final splitter box, the smaller size allowing two boxes to be fitted on to narrow shaft centres."
