SLR to prepare Landfill Directive guidance

"SLR Consulting have been awarded a contract by the Environment Agency as part of its preparations for implementation of the European Union Landfill Directive, which is due to come into force in July 2001."

"The contract involves the preparation of guidance relating to the classification of landfill sites. The Directive requires that all sites, operational after July 2001, are classified according to the waste types they can accept, specifically inert, non-hazardous or hazardous wastes."

"New landfills will have to comply immediately with all the relevant requirements of the Directive, while existing landfills will have until July 2009 to reach compliance."

"The new guidance will describe the types of wastes that can be accepted in each class of landfill, the classification process, and the implications of this process for the waste-management industry and its regulators."

SLR director John Leeson said: ‘We are looking forward to producing guidance that will be of use to both Environment Agency officers and the waste-management industry. The landfill classification process will mark a significant change in the waste-management industry as it starts to adapt to the requirements of the Landfill Directive.’
