Siemens extend motor scrappage scheme

Successful low-voltage motor scrappage programme will now run until 31 March 2012

SIEMENS Industry Automation & Drive Technologies (IA&DT) have announced an extension to their successful low-voltage motor scrappage scheme, which will now run until 31 March 2012

Launched on 1 August 2011, the key aim of the scheme is to help ease the associated costs of the European Union MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standard) legislation, which came into force on 16 June 2011.

The new legislation prevents the manufacture and sale of standard electric motors under IE2 (EFF1) class. As industry will face increased costs from purchasing new IE2 motors, Siemens IA&DT have extended their scrappage scheme to help reduce the impact on customers.

All customers can claim a fixed allowance against any low-voltage motor from any manufacturer through Siemens’ nationwide network of partners if they purchase a new Siemens IE2 motor from a partner. The partner will then collect the scrap motor.
The fixed allowance for scrapped motors is dictated by the kilowatt value, ranging from £10 for a 1.5kW unit up to £700 for a 315kW unit.

Andrew Peters, divisional director for Drive Technologies at Siemens IA&DT, said: ‘The scheme has proven very successful and we are pleased to be able to offer this extension and continue assisting our customers in dealing with the EU MEPS legislation.’
