Recycled asphalt on the agenda in Bristol

Thangam Debbonaire

MP sees first-hand how road construction materials are recycled at Express Asphalt facility

LOCAL MP Thangam Debbonaire has visited Aggregate Industries’ Express Asphalt operation in Bristol to witness first-hand how the facility is playing a vital role in recycling road construction materials.

Mrs Debbonaire, who has been MP of Bristol West since 2015, took an exclusive tour of the facility in St Phillips to understand how, through recycling asphalt and its component parts, the site is helping to meet the Government’s ambitious targets to halve greenhouse gas emissions in the construction sector by 2025.

Mrs Debbonaire also learnt more about the company’s pioneering Express Asphalt service and saw how the Bristol plant, one of three specialist mixing plants across the UK, produces Aggregate Industries’ SuperColour, a range of distinctly coloured asphalts increasingly used for colour demarcation of bus lanes, cycle lanes, sports landscaping and parks and natural areas.

The highly-successful visit involved an engaging discussion between Mrs Debbonaire and key Aggregate Industries’ staff, including area manager Andrew Newell on significant issues such as gender diversity and asphalt recycling, as well as the benefits of SuperColour and the Express Asphalt service.

Mr Newell said: ‘Today’s visit was a fantastic opportunity for us to show Mrs Debonnaire how the pioneering Express Asphalt business at our Bristol plant is delivering a quick and efficient service to utility, local authority and groundwork contractors within Bristol and the surrounding areas. We also hope we were able to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability by showing how we successfully recycle asphalt and its components parts.’

Mrs Debbonaire said: ‘I’d like to thank Aggregate Industries for inviting me to visit their Bristol Express Asphalt site. During the visit I was particularly interested to learn how a robust recycling strategy is essential for cutting carbon emissions from the construction materials sector, both on a national and local level.’
