Rapidmix plant helps pave the way

The Morgan Corporation who own a Rapidmix 600 mobile continuous mixing plant, successfully produced approximately 150,000yd3 of 6in and 8in roller compacted concrete at BMW’s assembly plant in Spartanburg, SC, USA.

The project involved paving the parking areas, roads and trailer storage surrounding the new BMW car assembly plant. Along with roller compacted concrete, the machine also produced cement-treated aggregate base and cement-treated soil.

Tom Webber from Morgan Corporation said: ‘The mobile plant’s ability to produce high quality materials quickly enabled our company to complete the project on schedule for BMW.’

Roller compacted concrete (RCC) has the same ingredients as conventional concrete - cement, water, and aggregates - it is, however, a drier mix and stiff enough to be compacted by vibratory rollers. It has the strength and performance of regular concrete, yet it is as economical and simple to use as asphalt.

It was first used in the 1970s in the Canadian logging industry, as they needed strong pavement to stand up to massive loads and heavy equipment having switched to environmentally cleaner, land-based log sorting methods. The strength and durability of RCC lived up to the job and it’s use has since expanded into other heavy-duty applications.
