Out with the new …. in with the old

"Onllwyn Washery, part of Celtic Energy, handles up to 350 tonnes/h of high-grade anthracite coal from opencast workings. As part of a major refurbishment three years ago, Celtic Energy set out their brief for future screening requirements at Onllwyn; this involved replacing the 20-year-old Allis Lo-Head screens. The contractor specified a screen supplier to meet both duty and delivery requirements and new screens were installed."

"However, due to less than adequate design and manufacture, the new screens proved troublesome, so much so that Leighton Grey, Onllwyn’s general manager, took the decision to replace the worst screen with one of the original Allis Lo-Head screens. Despite their age, all parts were available and the screen mechanism was refurbished by Svedala, with new springs and fixings supplied. The screen body was protected using 10mm Trellex rubber at the wear points."

The screen has now been working satisfactorily for 12 months and a further two Allis Lo-Heads have been refurbished and reinstalled.
