Jon Reedy to receive prestigious Christie Award for significant contribution to health and safety

JON Reedy, director of environment, safety and health with Lehigh Hanson Inc., has been named as the James M. Christie Safety & Health Professional of the Year 2013 by the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA).

The award, established in 1987, provides national recognition to an individual who has made a significant and proactive contribution to his or her company’s and the industry’s efforts towards safe and healthy operating practices.

The award will be presented during a special ceremony at NSSGA’s 2014 Annual Convention in Las Vegas on 4 March.

Through Mr Reedy’s work, Lehigh Hanson have brought about procedural changes and improved training with the goal of preventing injuries.

Mr Reedy (pictured) oversaw development of many of the training programmes, as well as the adoption of metatarsal footwear and cut/puncture-resistant work gloves, and improvements in machinery guarding.

He has also worked to establish, within his authority, the reporting of key safety information, along with guidance on how to avoid recurrence of injuries. Several facilities under his direction have surpassed the threshold of 1 million man hours worked without a lost-time injury.

Mr Reedy’s work has also helped to deliver substantial reductions in injury rates and worker compensation costs, as well as a reduction in the number of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MHSA) citations.

‘Jon’s diligent work to boost safety and health performance is a great example of the aggregates industry’s commitment to worker well-being celebrated by the Christie Award,’ said NSSGA president and chief executive officer Michael Johnson.

‘Jon’s achievements stand as an illustration of our industry’s commitment to work creatively and diligently to prevent all occupational injuries and illnesses.’
