New semi-mobile primary for Old Cliffe Hill

"MIDLAND Quarry Products Ltd have awarded a contract, worth in excess of £2.75 million, to Leipzig-based MAN TAKRAF Fördertechnik GmbH for a new semi-mobile primary crushing plant to be installed at Old Cliffe Hill Quarry, near Markfield, in Leicestershire."

"Forming part of the redevelopment of the Old Cliffe Hill site to recover previously sterilized granite reserves, the new plant will produce 2,500 tonnes/h of –250mm material which will be transferred by a conveyor system, through a new 713m long tunnel, to the existing processing plant at New Cliffe Hill Quarry. The plant is expected to become operational in February 2004."

"With a service weight of 865 tonnes, the 37m high structure is designed to be relocated every 5–10 years using multi-wheel trailer units, resulting in downtime of just 7–10 days for each move."

Key features of the plant include: twin dump hoppers to suit 100-tonne dumptrucks; a 54–77 gyratory crusher from FFE Minerals; a 200-tonne surge bin with vibrating discharge feeder; a 55-tonne capacity slewing service crane; and a lift for access to all levels of the plant.

"• After nine months of drilling and blasting, tunnelling work was completed on 12 June 2003 when engineers working from both ends of the new Cliffe Hill tunnel achieved breakthrough, some 14 weeks ahead of schedule. "
