New screens for RMC Marine

Finedoor have recently completed a project to replace two screens at RMC Marine’s Leamouth Wharf site in Southampton. The wharf has been in existence since 1955 with RMC controlling the operation since 1972.

The site processes approximately 200,000 tonnes a year of marine aggregates but planned improvements in throughput are designed to increase this to 300,000 tonnes. RMC Marine’s prime customer is an on-site RMC concrete plant, which takes approximately 40% of production, while a further 20% is supplied to nearby ready-mixed concrete plants with the remainder going to local building works.

The Finedoor contract involved the removal of two existing screens and the supply of two new bespoke retrofit screens into a refurbished existing support structure. Finedoor supplied one 7m x 2.4m two-deck screen and one 4m x 1.8m two-deck screen complete with SCS modular deck systems and grease lubrication. Owing to the location of the site, both units were supplied with a wear-resistant bonding to all wearing surfaces. Finedoor also supplied completely new drive systems powered by 22kW and 15kW motors respectively.

Both screens were designed and manufactured at Finedoor’s workshop, where the operation of each unit was fully tested in a ‘dry run’ before transportation to site. Finedoor engineers successfully interfaced the screens into the production system within the existing screen building in the specified time of eight days.

RMC Marine were so pleased with Finedoor’s product and approach to the job that they intend installing similar equipment elsewhere. Wharf manager Peter Sheehy commented: ‘It wasn’t a straightforward job, but I was very impressed with the manner in which Finedoor’s management and engineers paid attention to every detail of the project.’
