Modified Volvos

A Volvo A25C complete with 18,000-litre capacity fuel bowser is being used by J. Fenton & Sons (Contractors) at Scottish Coal's House of Water OCCS at Dalleagles, Ayrshire.

Having removed the standard body and tipping gear, Fenton fitted a bowser from USA-based Interpipe Equipment. The bowser features a low centre of gravity and a fast re-fuelling facility. The A25C bowser, on duty 24h a day, re-fuels the entire fleet of rigid dumptrucks, dozers and excavators on site in half the time it took previously, replacing two tractor and tanker combinations.

At the same site J. Fenton & Sons have modified three Volvo A40 articulated dumptrucks into coal haulers. Working with Messrs Jamieson of Girvan, the company have designed a coal hauler capable of carrying around 40m3 of coal per tip to the dispersal point. The A40s have had their standard bodies and tipping gear removed and replaced by coal bodies with single three-stage tipping cylinders. A fourth truck is currently being converted.
