MDL launch Technical Services Division

Mark Reid appointed to head up new division offering laser 3D measurement and consultancy services

A NEW Technical Services Division has been launched by eye-safe global laser-measurement technology specialists Measurement Devices Ltd (MDL).

The new division, which will operate worldwide but is based at MDL Ltd’s headquarters in York, England, will provide 3D laser measurement and consultancy services for customers’ specific projects and also undertake innovative assignments to demonstrate the capabilities of the company’s existing technology and new products as they become available.

Geomatics engineer Mark Reid (pictured) has been appointed as technical services manager in charge of developing the new division. He has more than 11 years LIDAR and laser-scanning industry experience and joins from Qatar-based engineering and technology business Consolidated Gulf Company, where he helped deliver some of the world’s largest laser-scanning-based turnkey engineering projects in the oil and gas sector.

Commenting on his new position, Mr Reid said: ‘The global laser measurement market is forecast to double in size in the next two years and our new Technical Services Division will ensure that as many businesses as possible can benefit from MDL’s ground-breaking technology.

‘Many companies which can benefit from using the latest laser surveying technology either do not have a big enough requirement to justify investing in our technology or may not have the funds to do so.

‘By accessing the Technical Services Division on an ad-hoc basis they will be able to call out specialists from our agents and distributors throughout the world to carry out assignments for them when they are required, without the need to invest in technology or train their own staff as operators.

‘The new division is also available to carry out certain assignments directly for larger end-users to demonstrate the capabilities of the latest technology.’

Meanwhile, MDL Ltd have acquired a 100% share in Thomas Engineering (TEC) Manotick, the company’s Canadian technical and distribution facility, based in Ottawa. The acquisition will allow MDL and TEC to launch a new business, MDL Canada Ltd, which will focus on sales and service to the Canadian mining, quarrying and surveying industries.

Last year MDL acquired a 100% holding of Melbourne-based MDL (Australia) Pty Ltd from mining and construction services business Jeminex Pty Ltd. The company also has a significant presence in Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Russia and China.
