Making savings with Avery Weigh-Tronix scale system

FLSC fork-lift scale system eliminates overfilling of bulk bags and provides significant savings for Walkers Builders Merchants

KENT-based Walkers Builders Merchants have saved around £35,000 by switching to a FLSC fork-lift scale system from Avery Weigh-Tronix and avoiding overfilling.

The company sells a wide range of aggregate products in one-tonne bulk bags. To fill the bags, Walkers use a JCB Teletruck fitted with Avery Weigh-Tronix FLSC fork-lift scales and a Bagezee attachment.

The scale is set to tare with the bucket empty. The JCB Teletruck then collects the aggregates from a pile in the yard and the weight is recorded by the FLSC fork-lift scale system. Once the bucket is full, any excess is dropped out through the bottom trap doors. A bulk bag is attached to the hooks on the side of the Bagezee attachment, which is filled by opening the trap doors.

Andy Coster, office manager for Walkers Builders Merchants, said: ‘Before using the FLSC fork-lift scale system, our operators were having to estimate the weight of aggregates going into the bulk bags. With found that, on average, the operators were overfilling the bags – and this was clearly detrimental to the profitability of the business.

‘We decided to take action and, through a recommendation, discovered the FLSC fork-lift scale system from Avery Weigh-Tronix. This solution means that there is no guesswork involved and there is now no need to worry about the loss of profit from overfilling or fines from Trading Standards Weights & Measures for under-filling.’

Walkers Builders Merchants have also taken out a maintenance contract with Avery Weigh-Tronix to ensure the FLSC fork-lift scale downtime is kept to a minimum and any technical difficulties are resolved quickly and efficiently as possible.
