Major reorganization at Hanson

"HANSON Quarry Products Europe have announced a major restructuring of their UK aggregates operations in a move to bring the business closer to the customer. Under the reorganization, the company’s existing regional structure will disappear and overall management of the business will be co-ordinated nationally, but with a strong local focus through seven geographical areas — Scotland & Cumbria; North West & North Wales; Yorkshire & North East; Central; South Wales; South West; and South East & London."

"In addition, all business-support services currently carried out at the regional offices in Wetherby, Shepshed and Frome will be consolidated into a national business-support centre based At Hanson’s head office in Chipping Sodbury."

"The restructured business will be managed by a UK aggregates board comprising recently appointed managing director Mike Ogden and six functional directors. David Tonkin, formerly chief operating officer for Hanson Pacific, becomes finance director; northern region managing director Mel Watts becomes operations director; southern region Premix director Bob Taylor becomes Premix director; Rob Sindel transfers from Hanson Australia to become trading director; and central region managing director John Hopkins becomes development director. Construction projects managing director Martin Stevens completes the new aggregates board. In addition, Hanson Recycling managing director, Mike Gentle, and Malcolm Hedges, head of safety, health and environment, will also report to Mike Ogden."

"Each of the seven geographical areas will be run by a team of four functional managers responsible for trading, Premix, operations and finance. One of the four people from each area will have the additional duty of area director with overall responsibility for area profitability. A review of structures below this level will take place once these area management teams are in place."

"Hanson say the organizational changes will transform their UK aggregates operations into a single national business with strong functional leadership, while at the same time bringing the business closer to the customer. The new business support centre will centralize, steamline and improve ‘back office’ functions by cutting out duplication and reducing non-value adding transactions."

"Commenting on the changes, managing director Mike Ogden said: ‘Standing still is not an option. Other companies are threatening our leading market position. This restructuring provides a great opportunity to be the best by delivering the best.’"

"The new reporting structure and organizational arrangements are scheduled to come into effect by November this year, with the national business support centre in Chipping Sodbury being fully operational by April 2002."
