Aggregate Industries complete A639 major road improvement project in record time

CONTINUING to break boundaries in modern and efficient road surfacing, Aggregate Industries say they finished work on a major road improvement scheme in Leeds ahead of schedule thanks to their meticulously planned approach.

Located immediately off the M1 Junction 44, the A639 from Leeds Road to Pontefract Road services the motorway slip road and a number of local distribution centres, including Royal Mail.

The carriageway required extensive planing, adjustments and the replacement of ironwork and kerbs. A key requirement of the project was that it needed to be completed quickly with minimum disruption to nearby businesses and the travelling public.

By liaising closely with local businesses over a three-month period prior to works commencing on site, the Aggregate Industries Contracting team was able to put together a phased 24h-working programme that maintained access to all affected businesses throughout the duration of the works.

Using this approach, no time was lost between shift changeovers and, during Phase 1 of the works, Aggregate Industries were able to lay 5,855 tonnes of asphalt and approximately 7,500 square metres of geotextile in just one weekend. Saturday night alone recorded 3,872 tonnes of asphalt laid in 18 hours, averaging 215 tonnes every hour during this period.

The company completed its work well ahead of schedule and delivered the project in just 54 hours compared with the 58.5 hours that were originally scheduled.

Paddy Murphy, managing director of contracting services at Aggregate Industries, said: ‘To plane out Friday night and inlay 5,855 tonnes asphalt by Sunday evening is simply unprecedented and we are incredibly proud of what we achieved on this project.

‘As we look to the future of our industry, the onus on optimizing efficiencies and alleviating disruption to the public and local businesses will only become greater. We are confident that our meticulous planning and highly skilled staff will have no problem achieving this.’
