Leadership Lunch and Learn webinar

Julian Smallshaw

IQ’s Julian Smallshaw will explain the importance of coaching and mentoring to enhance employees’ skills

UNDERSTANDING the importance of coaching and mentoring to enhance employees’ skills is the focus of this month’s ‘Lunch and Learn’ webinar from the Institute of Quarrying (IQ) Academy.

Julian Smallshaw (pictured), head of education and standards at IQ, will present the online webinar on Thursday 27 June, from 12:30–13:00. He will talk about effective development approaches to enhance employees’ skills, knowledge and work performance through coaching and mentoring.

Julian says: ‘The core of any organization is its workplace culture. Creating and nurturing the right environment reduces the potential for a fragmented organization and builds on the strengths of its greatest asset – its people.

‘To create a coaching and mentoring culture, organizations must ensure that people are equipped to give and receive more regular feedback. Importantly, that culture is one in which coaching, mentoring and other forms of continuous feedback can thrive.’

James Thorne, IQ’s chief executive officer, adds: ‘For the past quarter, our communications with members have been centred around the importance of leadership. The theme continues in this month’s IQ Academy webinar. Julian focuses on how to develop a positive workplace culture through coaching and mentoring.’

Carrying with him a wealth of knowledge from his extensive career in operational quarry management and extractives operations, from hard rock to sand and gravel, Julian has been undertaking the development and promotion of world-class, tailored education and training programmes with the Institute of Quarrying since 2008, creating bespoke blended training packages for the extractives industry.
