Lafarge Cement named as 2009 Sustainability Champion

LAFARGE Cement UK have been named as British Precast’s Sustainability Champion for the second year running. The award recognizes the associate member who has achieved the most by supporting and investing in the UK precast concrete industry’s sustainability programme over the last 12 months.

Lafarge Cement were commended for their achievements in reducing CO2 in the cement production process through their use of biomass alternative fuels and their Phoenix cement, which utilizes waste fly ash from the power industry.

The company’s investment in reducing water consumption, its successful partnerships with stakeholders and local communities and its exemplary safety skills training programme were also praised by the judges for demonstrating Lafarge’s dedication to sustainability at all levels of the business.

This latest honour follows Lafarge Cement’s success in winning the 2008 Sustainability Champion accolade for waste management, recycling and their sustainable supply chain initiatives.

Announcing Lafarge Cement UK as this year’s Sustainability Champion, Martin Clarke, chief executive of British Precast, said: ‘Lafarge Cement, along with the other UK producers, are playing a major role in the greening of concrete and are helping the precast sector to reduce its carbon footprint significantly.’

Erdogan Pekenc, managing director of Lafarge Cement UK, added: ‘Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do and is the key to the long-term health of the construction industry.

‘We are proud to be leading the industry towards a more sustainable future and honoured to receive this recognition. 2010 will see us take sustainable business to a new level as we strive to meet new goals, and we hope to inspire others in the industry to do the same.’
