Johnsons Services Ltd take on Terex Finlay screen

Terex Finlay 883 Reclaimer

Nottingham-based recycling firm acquires new 883 Reclaimer to cope with increasing workload

WHEN Johnsons Services Ltd won a contract to handle materials arising from a new tram project in Nottingham city centre, the company ensured it had the best equipment to achieve the efficiencies required on the contract. In today’s highly competitive market, Johnsons wanted any purchases they made to offer the best return on investment and provide the necessary flexibility for the longer term.

After trialling a range of different machines from several manufacturers, company director and founder, Steve Johnson, decided the Terex Finlay 883 would be the best screen to cope with the business’s anticipated heavy workload.

The 883 unit can process up to 1,000 tonnes a day and is being used as a primary screen for incoming inert spoil which, in turn, is being crushed and reused in concrete and other construction applications as a secondary aggregate. Johnsons are also using the machine to process incinerator bottom ash before further recycling with a fixed plant.

The recycling process is saving the company a considerable amount of money on fuel and reducing its emissions, as transporting the material to the nearest suitable landfill is a 200-mile-plus round trip. The 883 Reclaimer has a steel apron feeder, thereby eliminating the damage, ripping and costly replacements on a conventional belt feeder.

The screen is equipped with a Cat C4.4 engine that complies with Euro 4 emission standards as well as Tier 3 legislation for crushing and screening equipment. Steve Johnson commented: ‘The 883 is very flexible and will certainly cover everything that we need it to. We can change the decks on it fairly easily, which means I can quickly take it off one product and put it on another.’

Neil Bailey of Finlay Central added: ‘We are pleased Johnsons Services decided to opt for the 883 Reclaimer. The introduction of this versatile machine will increase productivity and help with any future contracts the company receives. The 883 is recognized as the leading forward-facing primary screen on the market today.’
