National Sports Performance Centre

Aggregate Industries provide integrated supply solution for Scotland’s new National Sports Performance Centre

AGGREGATE Industries have successfully supplied more than 15,000 tonnes of aggregates and specialist sand, and 1,100 square metres of commercial hard landscaping, to Oriam, Scotland’s new National Sports Performance Centre in Edinburgh.

Constructed in the parkland setting of Heriot-Watt University’s extensive campus in the west of the city, the £33 million multi-sport centre includes a full-sized indoor pitch with seating for 500 spectators, top-level grass and synthetic outdoor pitches, a high-performance strength and conditioning centre, a high-performance medical centre and hydrotherapy pool, fitness centres and studios, and support services.

Partnering with main contractors Bowmer & Kirkland, Aggregate Industries were able to offer an integrated materials supply solution, providing 5,600 tonnes of 6mm and 580 tonnes of 10mm single-size aggregates, as well as 4,633 tonnes of Levenseat ProPitch 25, 3,884 tonnes of ProPitch Rootzone, and 400 tonnes of ProPitch 20, plus 1,100 square metres of Charcon Andover Washed premium block paving in Anthracite Charcoal.

Andover Washed paving, which contains up to 50% recycled and reclaimed materials, was chosen for its flexible design capabilities and sustainable qualities, whilst the Anthracite Charcoal colour option was selected to complement the look of the prestigious new facility.

Duncan McCool, sales manager at Aggregate Industries, said: ‘Our unique selling point on the Oriam project was our ability to service the full construction materials brief through an integrated solution.

‘From the client’s perspective, this means one contact and a much simpler supply structure, particularly in terms of timetable management and site access, which, when you’re on a tight deadline with eight different pitches and various different materials specifications, comes into its own.

‘Our Levenseat silica sand quarry, in West Lothian, has built a reputation for offering the best sports sand on the market having supplied Hampden Park, BT Murrayfield, multiple Scottish Premier League football clubs, the Victoria Park Stadium and now the National Sports Performance Centre.

‘It’s safe to say that when customers have high-volume, high-profile projects which demand the best-quality silica sand and rootzones, this is where they come.’

Oriam is the performance base for both the Scottish FA and Scottish Rugby Union, as well as the sportscotland institute of sport (East), Basketball Scotland, Scottish Handball, Scottish Squash & Racketball, and Scottish Volleyball.

Providing athletes, coaches and officials with the facilities to create an exceptional performance environment, Oriam aims to reaffirm and strengthen Scotland’s sporting credential and put the nation firmly on the world stage. It will also be open to the wider public, inspiring future generations of Scots to aim for sporting excellence.
