Inspiring for Generations

IQ centenary book

Institute of Quarrying publishes limited edition ‘Inspiring for Generations’ centenary book

A NEW, limited-edition, 100-page ‘coffee-table’ book titled ‘Inspiring for Generations’ has been published to record the highlights of the Institute of Quarrying’s centenary and to celebrate the mineral extractives industry’s progress over the last century.

With an introduction from IQ’s centenary patron, the Duke of Devonshire, the book features a selection of photographs of IQ’s Quarry Garden at the first RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, with descriptions of the garden by designer Paul Hervey-Brookes.

The Quarry Garden narrative is threaded between the story of the Institute of Quarrying – from its earliest days in 1917 to the present day.

James Thorne, chief executive of the Institute, said: ‘This year has been all about marking 100 years of IQ, whilst always looking to the future and our next century and beyond.

‘Inspiring for Generations’ is a photographically-led book that captures the spirit of our organization and our industry’s transition from a highly manual and often dangerous pastime to a high-tech career that attracts highly educated and skilled individuals.

‘We’ve struck a balance in the book between the beauty of the Quarry Garden and the gritty reality of what we do. The Quarry Garden has been instrumental in delivering our message to the public that, as an industry, we are custodians of the natural environment, ever mindful of our obligation to our local communities.

‘That’s something to celebrate, whilst also acknowledging how far we have travelled as a sector over the last century, the essential role we fulfil in society and recognizing the people who have made that possible.’

The book includes a number of ‘Quarry Face’ case studies that focus on individuals from a variety of backgrounds who have chosen a career in the minerals extractives sector. Each case study explores their personal journey into quarrying, as well as the importance of continuing professional development for career progression.

‘Inspiring for Generations’ has a limited print run. For further information and/or to order, contact IQ on tel: (0115) 972 9995; or email: mail@quarrying.org
