Indonesian miner relies on Terex Trucks

Terex TA400 dumptruck

Tropical tin mining operation using 27 Terex Trucks TA400 haulers to maximize production

PT Putra Tongga Samudra manage some of the largest tin and sand mining activities on Bangka Island, in Indonesia, with their tin mining project in Pemali Sungailiat being one of the biggest.

The operation started almost a decade ago in 2009, and as production gained momentum the company turned to Terex Trucks for the purchase of three TA400 articulated haulers in 2010.

That year PT Putra Tongga Samudra produced a total of 256 tonnes of tin, but since then the company has mined 5,600 tonnes of tin down to a depth of 110m and has steadily grown its inventory of Terex Trucks to 27 machines to keep up with production.

‘We were interested in Terex Trucks’ articulated haulers because they work well during the rainy season and are easy to operate,’ said Fondy Hidajat, director of operations at PT Putra Tongga Samudra.

Supplied and maintained by Terex Trucks’ official dealer in Indonesia, PT United Equipment Indonesia, the TA400s are being used to shift large quantities of overburden and some of the haulers now have 20,000 hours on the clock.

The TA400 is the biggest model in Terex Trucks’ articulated hauler range. Designed to perform in challenging conditions, it has become a firm favourite amongst mining and quarrying customers.

Built in Motherwell, Scotland, the 38-tonne machine is powered by a six-cylinder Scania DC13 engine that develops a gross power of 331kW (444hp) and a maximum torque of 2,255Nm, providing excellent traction and an effective power-to-weight ratio.

In addition, the planetary gear transmission provides smooth, efficient gear shifting for optimized fuel consumption and reduced cost of operation, whilst ground-level test points, a fully tilting cab and an electronically raised hood ensure ease of service and reduced downtime.
