Improved traction for IR wheeled paver

At Milano Malpensa, Italy’s second largest airport, 660m of runway have been resurfaced by Scamoter and Colosio using Ingersoll-Rand Titan 473 wheeled pavers and Alexander DD95 9.5-tonne asphalt rollers.

The Titan 473 applied layers of asphalt 10cm deep and 6m wide. Each strip was 100–150m long and paved ‘hot on warm’ against the neighbouring strip, thereby allowing seamless transitions. The upper layer of ballast was paved ‘hot on hot’ with another Titan 473.

All Titan wheeled pavers are equipped with a separate power drive for each rear wheel that includes an anti-slip control (ASC). Working with the steering sensors, the ASC ensures optimum traction properties on the rear drive wheels when negotiating tight corners. The four front wheels are independently suspended and fitted with hydraulic ride levellers that are connected to each other by hydraulic tubing. If the paver travels over uneven ground, only one wheel rises while the remaining three stay on the ground. This helped to achieve optimum traction at Malpensa Airport and was one of the reasons why Scamoter decided to use the Titan 473 on a job normally carried out by tracked pavers.
