IChemE award success for RockTron

PIONEERING eco-mineral technology company RockTron Ltd recently beat 48 other shortlisted entrants, including Anglo American, BASF, BP, GlaxoSmithKline and many internationally renowned universities, to win the prestigious Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) International Innovation and Excellence Award.

Rank outsiders RockTron won the new IChemE Nicklin Medal for the most outstanding entry across 11 award categories, in recognition of the significant contribution they have made to the chemical and process engineering industry with their breakthrough in fly-ash beneficiation.

The company was also shortlisted for the Sustainable Technology Award, based on its new eco-mineral plant at Fiddler’s Ferry, in Cheshire. The plant is unique in that it can process both fresh and stockpiled coal-fired power station waste, transforming it into 100% recycled eco-minerals with no waste or effluent.

Manufactured using pneumatic flotation cells, specifically designed for fine-particle separation on an industrial scale, RockTron’s eco-minerals offer a wide range of new industrial applications, including use as a part-replacement material in concrete production.

According to Peter Crofts of RockTron, not only are the eco-minerals cheaper to buy than traditional replacement products, they are also more environmentally friendly. ‘For every 500,000 tonnes of our product that replaces OPC, up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 can be saved in the UK,’ he said.
