HSE issues new Safety Notice

THE Health and Safety Executive has issued a Safety Notice on the risks associated with the use of road vehicles in off-road applications in quarries, in particular the collapse of the vehicle roof in rollover situations.

The notice follows an incident in which an employee of a contractor was killed when the 4x4 road vehicle he was driving overturned on a quarry haul road. Although the victim was thrown from the vehicle during the incident, the roof of the vehicle collapsed.

The HSE is calling on employers to review their safety arrangements to ensure that the risk of vehicle rollover has been adequately assessed, and that where a risk exists, any vehicle exposed to that risk has adequate protection for the operator in the event of an overturn.

If necessary, vehicles should be fitted with additional rollover protection, such as a rollover cage, and seatbelts should be fitted and worn. In addition, the HSE says employees should co-operate with their employer in following safe working practices.
