CATERPILLAR Inc. today announced that Deromedi Carrières et Matériaux are using a combined heat and power (CHP) solution from Cat dealer Eneria France to support their sustainability and energy-optimization goals at their limestone quarry in Ciez, France.

Designed, installed and commissioned by the Eneria team, the containerized system features a Cat CG170-12 gas generator set configured to operate on propane fuel already used on site. The solution was selected for its fuel flexibility, enabling it to operate on renewable gas fuels such as bio-propane as they become commercially available.

The system provides 850kW of power for quarry operations and 605kW of heat energy for drying processes while reducing NOx emissions to less than half of the TA Luft standard (less than 100mg/Nm3 at 15% oxygen).

Additionally, Eneria France support long-term performance expectations and return on investment through an annual Customer Value Agreement (CVA), which includes regular maintenance at scheduled intervals as well as around-the-clock, on-demand technical support.

‘At Deromedi, we are strongly committed to limiting environmental impacts at every level of our operations,’ said Christophe Campos, Ciez site manager for Deromedi. ‘Eneria France have delivered a highly efficient CHP solution that supports our responsible approach while reducing energy costs.’

Facilities can reduce operating costs by implementing a Cat CHP system or a combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) system. Most Cat gas-fuelled engines can be configured with a CHP or CCHP system to simultaneously generate power for electrical loads while capturing waste heat that can be repurposed as thermal energy for facility processes or heating, ventilation, and cooling requirements.

While the combination of grid power and traditional boilers for thermal energy offers less than 50% energy efficiency, CHP and CCHP systems from Caterpillar can provide total energy efficiencies of up to 90%. This allows customers to save on energy spending, provide autonomy of supply, and reduce emissions. Moreover, Cat CHP and CCHP systems deliver a rapid return on investment.

‘Caterpillar’s CHP systems are proven solutions for helping enterprises maximize the return on their energy purchases while supporting their commitments to a lower-carbon future,’ said Sven Buehler, territory manager for gas product sales at Caterpillar.
