Bulk earthworks contractor benefits from award-winning transport-management system

ONE of the UK’s leading bulk earthworks contractors says it has become a more data-driven operation and has improved back-office efficiencies since adopting a transport-management system (TMS).

Based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Wordsworth Excavations provide nationwide support to some of the UK’s best-known construction contractors. Their specialist services include machine-led demolition and site clearance, as well as engineered earthworks projects. This includes removal of top soil and other materials from site, as well as bringing in significant amounts of aggregate.

The company operates 45 tippers: mainly eight-wheeler rigids plus some articulated vehicles and two all-electric trucks. The fleet also includes sweepers and tankers. Wordsworth wanted to move this operation from a paper-based job-management system to a TMS.

‘We are engaged in a lot of bulk haulage, exporting soil from site and importing aggregates,’ said Jason Thorp, compliance manager at Wordsworth Excavations. ‘We had always relied on a paper ticket system but that has several flaws and is not ideal for a diverse and busy fleet like ours.

‘We faced issues such as being unable to read a driver’s handwriting, or tickets getting lost. It was also hard to improve on time management because we had no visibility of data. We had no idea how productive each wagon and driver were until the end of the day when the tickets came back to the office. HaulTech has completely changed all of this for the better.’

HaulTech’s multi award-winning Bulk Haulage Transport Software solutions are proven to transform haulage businesses. According to HaulTech, this dedicated TMS for bulk hauliers enables operators to reduce administrative processes by up to 80%, minimize operational costs, and manage the entire process from job booking to invoice.

‘On a big job, we can be managing 150 loads a day going in and out,’ added Mr Thorp. ‘In the past, the admin time to manually input all of those tickets might be 90 mins. HaulTech can do it in less than 10 mins and the results are more accurate.

Wordsworth cite one of the key benefits of HaulTech as its user-friendly interface, which made it easy for everyone, including drivers, to get on board. The system is designed to be intuitive, meaning drivers quickly adapted to it without needing extensive training.

‘The simplicity of the system made it easy for our team to embrace,’ said Mr Thorp. ‘With clear instructions and real-time updates, the drivers were able to see the value right away – whether it was tracking their loads, optimizing their routes, or receiving instant feedback. As a result, we were able to ensure full buy-in across the team, improving overall efficiency and communication.’

Used by operators across the UK and Ireland, the HaulTech Bulk Haulage System is designed to improve and enhance a haulier’s existing workflow and processes, allowing them to work in a faster, smarter, and easier manner. It is part of HaulTech’s proven portfolio of haulage solutions, including TMS, WMS, tracking, and vehicle cameras.
