Hanson supply specialist concrete for A1 upgrade

HANSON have been awarded a £2.5 million contract to supply specialist concrete to the A1 upgrade project in Yorkshire.

The 12-month contract forms part of the Highways Agency’s scheme to widen a 13-mile stretch of the A1 from Dishforth to Leeming into three lanes by 2012.

Hanson are supplying Extrudakerb, who is working for main contractors Carillion, with two bespoke concrete mix designs for the central barrier and drainage channel.

A total of 30,000 cubic metres of Hanson Easybarrier and Hanson Easychannel are being supplied at a rate of 200 cubic metres a day from the company’s plant at Ripon.

Terry Balmer, Hanson’s technical services manager, said: ‘These two mixes have been specifically developed for the concrete barrier and channel market and have been designed to ease placement, reduce plant maintenance cost and achieve an enhanced surface finish.

‘In addition, they include a percentage of ground granulated blastfurnace slag, which helps to enhance the concrete’s sustainability credentials.’

Hanson were chosen for the contract after a series of successful trials demonstrating the benefits of Hanson Easybarrier and Hanson Easychannel were undertaken at their Ripon plant.
