Freightliner begin new contract with Quinn Glass

Quinn Glass partner with Freightliner Heavy Haul for deliveries of sand to Cheshire glass plant

FREIGHTLINER Heavy Haul have run the first train from Sibelco UK’s Middleton Towers Quarry to Quality Freight’s facility at Ellesmere Port, transporting sand on behalf of Quinn Glass, a division of Quinn Group. The sand will be used in the manufacture of glass containers for the food and beverage industries, at Quinn Glass’s plant at Elton, in Cheshire.

The first consignment on 7 April 2011 marked the start of a long-term contract between Quinn Group and Freightliner, with the aim of moving more products using the rail network. Freightliner Heavy Haul are providing the haulage and wagons as well as stock management of the products on behalf of Quinn Group.

The immediate start-up will consist of three trains a week into Ellesmere Port before the operation transfers to a dedicated terminal and unloading facility at the Quinn Glass site. Once the site is rail connected, which is due for completion in November this year, Freightliner Heavy Haul will transport the sand directly to the glass plant. In the interim there will be a short road leg between Ellesmere Port and Elton for final delivery of product.

Adrian Curry, chief executive of Quinn Glass Ltd, said: ‘We are very pleased to be partnering with Freightliner for our immediate and long-term rail freight haulage requirements and look forward to developing further opportunities in the months and years to come.

‘This transfer of sand from road to rail freight demonstrates a clear and long-term commitment from Quinn Glass to sustainable transport. The plant at Elton is a state-of-the-art facility and the reduction in road miles associated with this transfer to rail freight is just another step in our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.’
