Fossil hunt

"Aggregate Industries UK Ltd gave children from Lancashire the chance to find out what goes on at a working quarry when a primary school class from Arkholme School in Carnforth visited Holme Park Quarry recently. Company representatives were on hand to explain the quarrying process to the children and answer any of their questions, before encouraging the youngsters to hunt for fossils on part of the site."

"During the lunchtime break the children were taken to ‘The Island’, a protected mound of rock which forms one of two SSSIs at the quarry. The children were also given an insight into the formation of Carboniferous limestone and limestone pavement by geologist Rick Harbour, who manages the company’s nearby coating plant at Darwen."
