FM Conway win prestigious sustainability award

BSA Award

Better Society Award recognizes infrastructure service firm’s commitment to recycling and waste-management

FM Conway have continued to be recognized for their sustainability credentials, after picking up the Better Society Award for ‘Waste Management & Recycling Programme of the Year 2019’. Now in their fifth year, the Better Society Awards celebrate commercial organizations that are investing in more equal, ethical and sustainable ways of working.

FM Conway fought off stiff competition from Greene King and the London Waste and Recycling Board amongst others to be awarded the 2019 waste-management accolade at a prestigious ceremony, held at London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square.

Over the past 30 years, FM Conway have invested in an industry-leading network of asphalt manufacturing and recycling plants, processing waste materials from highway construction sites for re-use on future projects. The company is said to recycle more than 250,000 tonnes of asphalt from roads in London and the South East each year.

FM Conway also recycle gully waste from their water- and drainage-management operations at a specialist drainage treatment plant in Dartford – believed to be the only wet waste-recycling plant of its kind in the UK. Around 95% of the input materials sent to the plant are reused instead of being sent to landfill as hazardous waste.

Michael Conway, chief executive officer of FM Conway, commented: ‘Recycling is part of our DNA at FM Conway and thanks to our continued investment, we now recycle 98 per cent of the waste generated by our construction activities.

‘The Better Society Awards are an important part of making sure that businesses continue to strive for better ways of working and we’re proud to be leading the charge on a more circular approach to materials in our industry. Investing in sustainability is the right thing to do for our planet but it also makes business sense; in our case helping us to drive efficiencies for our clients and ensure a regular material supply.’
