First-quarter rise in aggregates sales

SALES volumes of sand and gravel aggregates increased by 5% and crushed rock aggregates by 1% in the first quarter of 2000, according to the latest figures issued by the Quarry Products Association.

Sales volumes of the principal value-added products also showed gains, with asphalt sales up 1% and ready-mixed concrete sales up 2%.

This positive trend reflects expectations of a steadier market in 2000 and comes as welcome news after last year's disappointing 4.5% fall in aggregate volumes.

The QPA says forecasts of construction output for 2000 predict stronger growth than the 1% rise achieved last year, while plans for higher investment in transport should also help generate stronger demand for aggregates.
