Edbro tipping cylinders move more material

Tipper trucks can be used for a number of tasks, from general hire work and earthmoving contracts to demolition work and the delivery of materials such as subsoil, aggregates and recycled products.

To help trucks meet such demands, with maximized payloads and faster tipping speeds, many road haulage operators and plant hire companies are turning to Edbro’s CX15 tipping hoists, one of the lightest and fastest components available for 8x4 tippers.

Without compromising quality or performance, truck operators have struggled to reduce the weight of truckmounted equipment to maximize payloads. Furthermore, the added weight of Adblue tanks, pumps, and SCR catalysts required under the Euro 4 directive, serves only to make this challenge harder.

Edbro’s CX15 tipping cylinder, however, can offset the added weight of Euro 4 and increase payloads. The CX15 has been designed and developed using the latest finite element analysis techniques, resulting in a fully-integrated ram and tank design.

Wirral-based D. Morgan have recently invested in 10 new Iveco Trakker 8x4s, all of which employ Edbro’s CX15 tipping gears to ensure maximized payloads and the fastest tipping speeds for the quickest possible vehicle turnarounds.

Weight savings for each tipper are estimated to be up to 165kg.This provides D. Morgan with a potential increase in payload of 0.825 tonnes per day on a typical five loads per day schedule –– or 198 tonnes extra payload each year.

Although increased payload was a highly important factor for the company, the primary reason for specifying the Edbro CX15 unit was its 20% faster lowering speed.‘We run our own quarries and also clear demolition sites, so we demand the fastest possible turnarounds for our trucks,’ explained Graham Bailey, workshop manager for D. Morgan. ‘The integrated design of the Edbro tipping cylinders gives us this performance.’

In addition to maximized payloads and quicker tipping speeds, the CX15 has been designed to prevent the vehicle body from falling should a hose burst, as there are no external hydraulic hoses or fittings in the design.

Meanwhile, Edbro’s CS series of tipping hoists has helped Wilcox Commercial Vehicles, manufacturers of aluminium bodies, achieve IRTE Category ‘A’ classification, following tests of its Monocoque tipping trailer at IRTE’s Chobham tilt test facility.

Chris Bartlett, technical director for Wilcox Commercial Vehicles, said: ‘Providing greater safety for users of our trailers is of paramount concern to us. Using a CS18 hydraulic tipping cylinder from Edbro, we redesigned the trailer chassis with the objective of achieving greater stability, and the new design has been a complete success, not only achieving IRTE Category A, but exceeding it.

‘We have a long-standing relationship with Edbro, having used their tipping cylinders for over 30 years due to their quality, reliability and lightness, which perfectly complement the benefits of our weight-saving trailer designs. Key to the low weight/maximum strength design of the CS series is the special one-piece tube construction, which is laser welded to ensure the required levels of tube concentricity and highquality welds demanded by the compact design.

‘The construction maximizes cylinder strength at the top of each extended stage, to resist side loads induced by the body during tipping. It also provides maximum cylinder stiffness at full extension.’

As a result, the CS tipping cylinders are able to provide increased lift capacity while providing increased payloads through weight savings of up to 20%.The benefit of this for fleet operators is that increased payloads mean increased profits.
