Donaldson extend dust-collector range

Donaldson, manufacturers of industrial dust-collectors, have expanded their Downflo Oval (DFO) range of dust collectors with the launch of three smaller, self-contained units designed for use in restricted spaces or for mobile applications.

The advanced technology of these dust filters is based around two of the company’s most successful products to date; the DFO series filter cartridge; and the Ultra-Web filter media, which is said to provide a high filtration efficiency rate of 99.999% on 0.5 micron dust particles.

In recent years Donaldson have invested heavily in research and development; the latter product being a prime example. The Ultra-Web filter medium consists of ‘nanofibres’, which are made by an electro-spinning process that produces very fine continuous fibre of only 0.2–0.3 microns in thickness.

The production process also creates a resistant web-like net with extremely fine inter-fibre spaces, which are much smaller than those of conventional filter media, so that more of the micron and sub-micron particles are held on the filter surface. This means particles are easily released and less pressure is required during self-cleaning.

Donaldson say the use of their patented ExtraLife filter cleaning system improves the efficiency of cleaning by nearly 30%. Also, with the lower height of the filter pleats no mechanical impairment occurs after frequent cleaning.

As a result of these benefits, Donaldson believe their Ultra-Web filter media with its web-like nanofibre technology has up to twice the working life of conventional filters. The company also claim that: for dust particles of 1 micron, Ultra-Web provides 40% better filtration efficiency; and for dust particles of 0.5 micron, the efficiency is up to 58%. The filter media is also claimed to have a retention rate of 99.9% on 0.2–2 micron dust particles, fulfilling the highest industry standards.

To exploit the effectiveness of the highly efficient DFO filter cartridges, compact, flow-optimized housings have been developed for the three DFO models: 1-1; 1-2; and 3-3. The dust collectors offer the lowest possible energy consumption, which was a primary goal for Donaldson, as was the high level of filter performance, given that the company has invested 16,000h in the development of the DFO cartridges and over 635,000kg of test dust has been consumed.

Compared with competitive units, the filter is said to provide a 25% increase in airflow capacity and an improved airflow path, all in a compact, high-efficiency collector. Service-friendliness was also taken into account in the development of the dust filters. A quick-release system, for example, is included for the rapid exchange of filter cartridges.

Covering a wide range of applications, the DFO dust collectors are offered in 26 different sizes for 1 to 128 cartridges. Each ready-to-fit model is supplied with an integrated controller, fan (available in five sizes), silencer, spark trap and dust-container.
