Cornish crushing victory for Colas

Aram Resources Ltd, the quarrying division of Colas Ltd, have started a recycling operation at Carnsew Quarry, in Cornwall, where they will carry out the crushing and recycling of glass bottles and waste concrete.

The new venture follows an evaluation trip in 2005 by Aram's operations director, Stewart Struthers, and Rod de Figueiredo, business manager for the South-West, to Colas Group sister company Carrieres d'Arvel SA in Switzerland.

Working in partnership with Cornwall County Council, Aram have agreed to supply CORMAC, the county's highways maintenance department, with asphalt containing crushed glass to help them meet their recycling obligations.

Deliveries of waste glass bottles are being supplied by Valient Recycling Ltd to Carnsew Quarry where they are crushed and screened to produce a -6mm glass sand for use in asphalt production, with the added environmental benefit that previously the majority of waste glass collected in Cornwall was transported by road to Yorkshire.

Under an existing waste-recycling management licence, Carnsew Quarry is also accepting waste concrete from local demolition sites and crushing it to produce structural fill materials such as 6F2 and base fills.

Despite being at a unique disadvantage when competing with Cornwall's china clay waste, which is exempt from the aggregates levy, Aram say they are working with customers to provide a cost-effective solution to some of their waste issues.
