Cool work for Amco

A team of British engineers from Barnsley-based Amalgamated Construction (Amco) has recently designed, supplied and installed a new £3 million ship-loading facility at the Svea Nord coal mine on the Arctic island of Spitsbergen, midway between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole.

Operated by state-owned Store Norske, Norway’s sole coal producer, the site is the most northerly coal mine in the world and one of the most productive in Europe.

The project, carried out by Amco Infrastructure Services and sister company Amco Birtley, included the removal of existing plant and equipment and the installation of a new spreader feeder, a 4m x 10m double-deck banana screen and a US-supplied McLanahan Corp. 3.6m rotary breaker, as well as up-rating of the existing conveyor system and the installation of a new rejects conveyor.
