Contaminated land audit services

In anticipation of the implementation of Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 via Section 57 of the Environment Act 1995, Casella Science and Environment have combined the skills and experience of their contaminated land and GIS teams to develop a new range of services for local authorities.

Initially, the legislation will only be released in England and will place an immediate statutory responsibility on the 360 English local authorities to identify and assess potentially contaminated land in their areas. Each authority must develop and submit an inspection strategy to the DETR by June 2001. The GIS Contaminated Land Audit will allow Casella experts to collate, compile and interpret the complex digital data that will be generated during the audits of large geographical areas.

Stage 1 of the audit will identify the potentially contaminated sites, while in stage 2 each site will be subjected to a risk assessment of contaminant sources, pathways and receptors. This will determine the risks posed to humans, ecosystems and controlled waters.

A digital masterplan of the area will be delivered to the authority with all potentially contaminated sites identified and ranked according to the risks posed. This will be supported by a ranked table of sites which will allow local authorities to set priorities for further investigation and site remediation.
