Chinese superquarry assessment

SANDU Bay on China's south-east coast could become the site of a new granite superquarry on the lines of Glensanda Quarry in Scotland.

"At the invitation of Hong Kong-based investors Sanko Holdings, UK-based consultants Wardell Armstrong recently sent a team of three experts to the area to survey the existing operations and to report on the extent of the reserves, the quality and potential uses of the rock, and the plant required to increase annual output to 12 million tonnes."

"Wardell Armstrong are also carrying out preliminary assessments of the potential environmental impacts of the quarry development, and of the port infrastructure required to supply quarried products to Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong."

"Subject to Wardell Armstrong's advice, it is understood Sanko's future plans include developing this part of Sandu Bay as a strategic international port for the Fujian region of China."
