CEMEX UK win major road safety award

Company receives award for cyclist safety programme from road safety charity Brake

CEMEX UK have been presented with an award for their cyclist safety programme by the Fleet Safety Forum, a division of the road safety charity Brake. The company was the winner in the ‘Road Safety in the Community’ category.

The award recognizes not only the research and investment in additional safety features added to the fleet of CEMEX concrete mixers, cement tankers and aggregate tippers, but also the company’s continuing work in attending cycling events throughout the country to educate cyclists about safe cycling around large vehicles.

The award was one of 11 category awards presented at the 9th annual Fleet Safety Forum Awards for Excellence, with 35 companies either winning or highly commended for their work and achievements in the field of road risk management.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive at Brake, said: ‘The Fleet Safety Forum Awards for Excellence 2011 received more entries than ever before, showing the huge amount of commitment to managing road risk within the industry.

‘It’s fantastic to be able to recognize companies, such as CEMEX, that are helping to drive down crashes and casualties by raising the bar of fleet safety best practice. Brake congratulates CEMEX on their achievement.’

The award was received by Julie Welch, logistics HR manager with CEMEX UK. She said: ‘I was delighted to receive the award on behalf of colleagues throughout the company that have worked so hard to spread the message of safe cycling. But our work doesn’t stop here; this year we are committed to attending more cycling events around the country and hopefully getting more cyclists into the cab to see a driver’s perspective of the road for themselves and the potential dangers around large vehicles.’
