CDE unveil ‘game-changing’ C&D waste-recycling plant

CDE waste recycling plant

Brewster Bros increase recycling production with new CDE facility in Central Belt region of Scotland

LIVINGSTON-based Brewster Bros have officially opened one of the largest construction and demolition (C&D) waste-recycling plants in the UK. The new state-of-the-art plant – which features a CDE wet-processing system – will supply high-quality recycled aggregates to local builders, construction firms, civil contractors and utility businesses from Brewster’s recycling site in Scotland’s Central Belt.

The recycling centre includes more than £2 million of investment in high-efficiency CDE equipment and will support the Scottish Government’s Circular Economy Strategy, ‘Making Things Last’, which aims to secure 70% recycling of C&D waste by 2020.

The CDE waste-recycling plant can process/recycle soil and rubble (collected by Brewster Bros’ fleet of tipper lorries from construction sites) into high-value sand and gravel – reducing waste disposal costs for the company’s customers while maximizing waste recovery.

The collected waste is not subject to landfill tax, while the recycled aggregates produced are exempt from the aggregates levy, which will help the business to keep its prices competitive.

The state-of-the-art CDE wet-processing solution has been designed with an emphasis on processing difficult C&D waste materials and optimizing material recovery. The waste-recycling plant, which has a recycled production output rated at 400,000 tonnes per annum, is fed by an R2500 primary screening unit that scalps off oversized +100mm material.

The remaining material enters a M4500 modular washing plant which feeds, screens, washes and stockpiles on a single compact chassis. The M4500 unit produces two washed aggregates: 4–40mm; and 40–80mm; as well as two sand materials (0–4mm and 0–2mm).

The 4-40mm material passes on to an AggMax 253R log-washer that ensures maximum product yield from clay-bound materials. Three scrubbed recycled aggregates are produced: 4–10mm; 10–20mm; and 20–40mm.

The CDE recycling plant also includes sliding dual sand conveyors, giving Brewster Bros the flexibility to blend sand to meet any specific grading requirements. To increase efficiency, the facility is equipped with a full water and sludge management system that includes an AquaCycle A600 thickener which, in combination with the CF8000 centrifuge, ensures 90% of water recirculates for immediate reuse in the plant – reducing the need for fresh top up water to a minimum.

David Kinloch, regional manager UK and Ireland for CDE, said: ‘I am delighted to have had the opportunity to work with Brewster Bros to create a construction, demolition and excavation waste-recycling plant bespoke to their site and production requirements.

‘This large-scale facility incorporates the latest CDE technology and will be a flagship project in Scotland. We wish Brewsters every success as they champion the move towards zero waste and embrace the circular economy and look forward to a continued strong partnership in the years to come.’
