Bulk Solids Handling Technology

EACH year The Wolfson Centre, part of the Engineering Department at the University of Greenwich, runs a programme of short courses for industry to help with bulk solids materials handling problems.

The courses are aimed at engineers, managers, skilled operatives and maintenance staff, or anyone involved in the use of powders. All the courses are held in the specially designed Short Course Centre at the University’s Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime.

The 2008 short course programme comprises:

Quality in Powder Handling (30 January): this course will look at maintaining or improving product quality; correct design of equipment to minimize segregation; handling of materials to reduce breakage; approaches to minimize the caking of material; and techniques to make materials more resistant to loss of quality.
Storage and Discharge of Powders and Bulk Solids (4–5 March): this course will look at the basics of hopper and silo function; dealing with potential problems; the determination of hopper geometry for hopper flow; practical examples; discharge aids and interfacing to feeders; and feeder design.
Pneumatic Conveying of Bulk Solids (13–14 May and 1–2 October): this course will look at components of pneumatic conveying systems; design techniques; interfacing storage bins to conveying systems; operational problems and their effects on system design; and all aspects of system selection and operation.
Overview of Particulate Handling Technology (18–19 November): this course will look at vessel types and reliable flow; characterization of materials; pneumatic and mechanical handling; and feeder interfacing.
