BDS publish latest annual market reports

Aggregates

Latest annual market updates now available on aggregates, asphalt and ready-mixed concrete

BDS Marketing Research, the leading industry consultancy specializing in the heavy buildings materials markets, have published their latest annual reports providing independent estimates of outputs and market shares of all companies and their operations in Great Britain.

The three main reports cover Aggregates, Asphalt and Ready-Mixed Concrete. Further reports on other markets, including Concrete Building Blocks, Block Paving and Paving Slabs, will follow shortly.

A key highlight of the reports shows that volumes held up in each of the markets during 2018, with growth for each product over 2017, albeit of only 1–2% in each case. However, forecasts from BDS suggest a weakening overall and a contraction on a number of levels.

Planning permissions for new sand and gravel and crushed rock reserves were lower in the last 12 months, as was the number of new sites opening, whilst sites closing or being mothballed increased.

Planning consents for asphalt plants, for both new sites and replacement plants, were also down. There has also been a notable reduction in changes in site ownership and acquisitions at company level across all products.

The top five companies are the same in each of the markets, with positions varying from product to product, although the reports show Tarmac to be the leader in all three. Their combined impact also varies, from around 80% in asphalt, to 72% in aggregates and 61% in ready-mixed concrete. In the latter, the share of the total market accounted for by the mobile batched sector (aka volumetric) has increased again.

These are some of the conclusions from the annual BDS reports, which represent the only independent source of information on the outputs and market shares of all sites and companies in Great Britain.

Each report provides estimated outputs at individual site level, with volumes and market shares shown at county, regional and national level. Aside from the five major producers, there are significant numbers of sites and producing companies in each sector, many with a strong regional or local presence.

Details of planning activity for extensions and new facilities, supporting existing and proposed growth across the industry, are also included. BDS monitor each of the 400+ planning authorities on an ongoing basis to track new schemes and decisions on existing proposals.

Each report also contains an economy-wide construction forecast for the next four years, along with a product-specific forecast. BDS expect each sector to continue to continue to be relatively flat until 2020, due partly to major infrastructure project delays and Brexit uncertainty. The early part of the next decade is expected to see all sectors return to growth, underpinned by increased housing construction and the delivery of the Government’s infrastructure programme.

BDS also prepare market surveys and reports for individual clients in these sectors, which can include customer research, new product development, company profiles and acquisition appraisals, and analysis of markets and prices.
