BAA launch new safety scheme

A NEW scheme to help quarry operators ensure that their sites are being operated in compliance with the Quarries Regulations 1999 will be announced by the British Aggregates Association (BAA) at their annual general meeting in Buxton on 25 June.

The BAA scheme has been welcomed by the Health and Safety Executive and field trials have already been carried out. Full details of this and other initiatives will be available on the BAA stand (P133) in the main pavilion at Hillhead 2007.

The objective of the BAA scheme is to demonstrate that a quarry is being managed and operated in a safe and competent manner. It is expected to become an essential management tool for responsible quarry operators without dedicated health and safety resources. The scheme is also designed to spread best practice throughout participating companies and contribute to the achievement of Target Zero, which the BAA also supports.

The BAA is grateful for the help and guidance it has received from Helen Turner of the HSE; Eric Darlow, author of Health and Safety Law in Quarries; Jon Bennett, Camborne School of Mines; and Rory Graham, health and safety consultant.
