Asphalt in a Changing World

SUSTAINABILITY, energy efficiency, climate change and society’s carbon footprint are key concerns in the modern world. These concerns impact upon the highways industry just as much as other sectors. Also of coming importance to the industry and its clients will be the changes in asphalt specifications that will arise from the introduction of European Standards on 1 January 2008.

These main themes will form the backbone of the programme for this year’s AIA conference, ‘Asphalt in a Changing World’, which takes place on 2 October 2007 at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull, West Midlands.

Organized by the Asphalt Industry Alliance of the Quarry Products Association and the Refined Bitumen Association, with the support of the Highways Agency and County Surveyor’ Society, the conference is aimed at all those involved in the highways industry, including designers, specifiers, producers and contractors.

Conference presentations are planned on: asphalt materials for a changing climate; asphalt laying techniques for greater durability; energy management in the asphalt industry; night working for reduced traffic congestion; European standards for asphalt; and highway maintenance funding needs.

Speakers will include leading specialists from the asphalt industry, highway authorities and consultants. In addition, motoring journalist and TV presenter Quentin Willson will address the conference, while open forum discussions at the end of the morning and afternoon presentation sessions will encourage debate of the issues.
