Aggregates hammered down under

One of the first Rammer m18 hammers in Australia has been delivered to Readymix’s Petrie Quarry near Brisbane and is being used on a Caterpillar 330CL excavator for breaking oversized blue and green basalt rock.

The m18 replaces a lighter-class Rammer G80 hammer, which, according to Robert Brett, quarry manager, had done a good job but was due for replacement. Readymix, in ordering the larger class m18, opted to go for improved technology, with the new hammer incorporating the latest modular design concept from Rammer.

The m-series of hammers utilize an impact module, a tool module and a housing module. In addition, the new hammer incorporates the latest ‘mode-selection’ feature that allows the operator to select the best pressure flow for specific applications. Three settings can be chosen — hard, fractured and mid-range — to suit different rock conditions without losing any power. The m18 has an operating weight of 1,880kg and impact rates of 450–800 blows/min.

Within the first week of operation Readymix recognized an immediate improvement in performance compared with the lighter G80. Two months on and, in addition to a continuous improvement in performance, the company have continued to make significant fuel savings for the excavator in excess of 10%. Despite being in almost constant demand, the hammer has delivered upwards of 95% availability.
