Aggregates, cement and concrete bodies to merge

REFLECTING the changes taking place in the industry, the British Cement Association (BCA), the Quarry Products Association (QPA) and The Concrete Centre (TCC) are to merge to form a new, single organization, which will formally launch on 1 January 2009.

Representing industries that contribute £5 billion of value to the UK economy, the new consolidated organization will focus on strengthening its visibility and impact. By rationalizing the upper structure of the three organizations, and with unified governance, their resources will be used more effectively and the interface with members and stakeholders will be simplified.

The new merged organization has Lynda Thompson, current chairman of the QPA, as its chairman designate and Mike Gilbert, current chief executive of the BCA, as chief executive designate.

Lynda Thompson heralded the announcement as a great opportunity for the new organization to reflect the changed structure of the UK industries and to really add value.

She said: ‘With wider scope and enhanced profile, we can build upon the achievements of the three constituent bodies and take the work forward. I am confident that this merger is in the best interests of all of our members, the industry and the users of our essential products.’

Mike Gilbert added: ‘The opportunity for us all now is to ensure that the value of the new combined organization is greater than the sum of its parts.’

The new organization will encompass nine product groups and will have a broad structure and core elements similar to the current QPA structure.

At present it is still not clear whether the new organization will operate under a new banner or if the three constituent bodies will retain their existing well-established identities. A decision is expected within the next few weeks.
