Aggregate Industries win Western Isles contract

AGGREGATE Industries UK Ltd have secured a four-year civil engineering contract with Scotland’s Western Isles Council to maintain and repair the road network on the Isle of Lewis.

"Under the new contract, estimated to be worth around £2 million, Aggregate Industries will carry out emergency repair and general maintenance work on over 200 miles of Lewis’ roads. The company will also undertake any minor civil engineering projects for the Council during the contract period, with an estimated value of £400,000 a year."

"‘The contract will initially run for four years, but the Western Isles Council has included an option to extend the contract period for an extra two years,’ said Aggregate Industries’ Western Isles director, Angus MacLeod."

"‘We have a number of local staff in the Western Isles who are highly experienced in supervisory work, which is key to the success of a contract of this type. This was one of the factors that helped us to win the contract."

"‘We have also built up a good long-term relationship with local plant-hire companies and, as an added bonus, can draw on the pool of resources available within our parent company, as well as technical and financial backing.’"

"As part of the contract, 10 employees from the Western Isles Council’s own Direct Services Organization will transfer to Aggregate Industries under TUPE regulations, joining the company’s 65-man team in the Western Isles."

"Aggregate Industries, who operate three quarries, two coating plants and a concrete plant in the Western Isles, also hold two other contracts with the Western Isles Council: one is an annual contract to supply the Council and its contractors with dry-stone aggregates; the other is for all overlay surfacing work on Lewis, Harris and North and South Uist."
