Company supplying 27,000 tonnes of Type 1 sub-base for Leicester Commercial Park development

AGGREGATE Industries are approaching the final stages in the supply of some 27,000 tonnes of Type 1 sub-base for the Leicester Commercial Park development in the East Midlands.

Situated in one of the UK’s most sought after logistics locations, just off junction 21 of the M1 motorway, the 40-acre industrial estate is currently being developed by commercial property specialists Goodman.

The site, which is due to be completed later this year, will include two substantial units (335,000 sq ft and 95,500 sq ft) that will provide much-needed distribution space in the heart of what has become known as the ‘logistics golden triangle’.

Instrumental to the project’s success is the consistent supply and delivery of high-quality hardstone aggregate, for use in building the foundations of the development. To this end, earthworks contractors Barton Plant called on the services of Aggregate Industries to provide the vast amount of materials needed.

Over five months from October 2017, Aggregate Industries’ specialist team supplied some 22,000 tonnes of Type 1 sub-base aggregate, at up to 1,000 tonnes per day, and a further 5,000 tonnes of material will be provided as the works progress.

With the project located on a flood plain, one of the main challenges encountered was the severe weather during the winter months, which at times resulted in supplies being altered or required at short notice.

However, with Aggregate Industries’ Bardon Hill Quarry located in nearby Coalville, the company was able to deal with any issues that arose and ensured a consistent supply.

Phil Koen, contracts manager at Barton Plant, said: ‘We’ve worked with Aggregate Industries for a number of years now and I’m always impressed by the quick, efficient and exceptional service they provide, which has been instrumental in progressing this particular project.

‘Working on a development of this scale and complexity, it is important to partner with genuine experts who will not only ensure our aggregate requirements are met through superior products, but also have the expertise to react quickly if things don’t go to plan.’

Stewart Regan, sales manager at Aggregate Industries, commented: ‘By working closely with Barton Plant from the outset, we were able to put in place a robust plan to ensure consistent supply despite extreme weather conditions throughout the winter months.

‘As such, we looking forward to continuing our supply of aggregates to the Leicester Commercial Park development until its completion later this year.’
